The third Celebrate Life lunch in aid of the National Neurosurgical Centre took place on Saturday 7th May in the Westin Hotel.
The event focuses on the many patients who have been through neurosurgery at Beaumont Hospital and this year we heard from the wonderful, twenty-three year old Sophie Pierce from Kildare. Sophie spoke movingly and with passion about her journey through four surgeries to treat a brain tumour and gave us all some heart-felt advice on living in the now. Incredible words for someone so young for which she received a standing ovation.
We also heard from Paul Markey from Dublin whose wife, Grainne, suffered a brain anneurysm in 2012 and he spoke about her time in Beaumont and how the families emotions and fears while she lay unconscious. Thankfully, Grainne has made a full recovery and walked the Camino with Paul earlier this year to celebrate their 40th year wedding anniversary.
Prof Ciaran Bolger gave a very insightful and amusing talk following lunch to rapt attention before buying the Maradona signed jersey to match the Pele one from last year in our auction!
It was a really wonderful and emotional afternoon and as always we loved meeting all the former patients of neurosurgery at Beaumont and celebrating life in their company.
